Excel 08 Youth Arts Programme draws to a close

This is the sixth year of Mayo County Council Arts Office Annual Youth Arts Programme - Excel. The programme runs throughout the month of November and is aimed at young adults and teenagers. Workshops and masterclasses were provided for groups already in the arts as well as open events for young people who wanted to try something new.

Big Band Boogies at Linenhall

Castlebar Concert Band presents Big Band Boogies on Thursday March 5 at the Linenhall, Castlebar. The band will play a selection of lively marches, jazz, rock, and light classical music. The Castlebar Concert Band convenes for practice on Tuesday evenings in St Patrick’s NS Hall under the direction of Debbie Clarke. Debbie is an experienced musician and has attended several courses and workshop to fine-tune her skills as a conductor. The concert band has been existence for several decades and its musicians perform with lively energy and skill. A great evening of music and entertainment is expected.

Mayo Youth Theatre

After having had a highly successful 2008 to 2009, Mayo Youth Theatre-Ballina returns for an even more exciting and ambitious season. Meeting every Tuesday between 6pm to 8pm, members participate in specially designed drama workshops, specialist technical and performance workshops and of course trips to the theatre. But most importantly it is high energy group work and great fun.

Mayo Youth Orchestra shines at international music festival

The Mayo Youth Orchestra have done themselves and their county proud at an international music congress held in The Netherlands. Performing amongst a group of highly talented orchestras from all corners of Europe at the eighth European Festival of Amateur Orchestras, the young group’s blend of fun and lighthearted music mixed in with a bit of Irish traditional music went down well. A highly enjoyable event for all (May 21-24) held in Dalfsen in the east of The Netherlands concluded with an impromptu performance of traditional Irish music and dancing, as friends were made from across the Continent through classical and more contemporary music.
